    (Special Dunne Music JD0995 (1995)

Phyllis Dunne sings Christmas carols and plays mountain dulcimer on Joyously Dunne, and does both quite well. Dunne uses the dulcimer effectively to complement her fine, clear singing, picking out delicate melody and counterpoint and adding rich chord backup to 17 of the usual suspects. Of course, having Peter Ostroushko, Beppe Gambetta, and a few others as backup musicians on some tracks doesn’t hurt either.

    Phyllis Dunne

“If you’re like me, sometimes the ragged pace we have to keep makes it difficult to just simply relax, but when I’ve finished answering a hundred letters and listened to a dozen tapes by songwriters that want to be published, I like to put something on the machine that “I” like, and what a pure pleasure it is to have in my aching little typewriter stunted hands a tape that does exactly what I want it to do … relax me! Phyllis Dunne has been performing and singing with her lovely soaring voice for many years in the Omaha area. She has diligently helped others not only through her own resources but through her participation in J.A.M. (Just Acoustic Music) and the Wildwood Dulcimer Club. She not only soars with her voice, she uses her lap dulcimer as an accompanist freely and suitably to match her gifted voice. She puzzles sometimes … do people really like what I do? Of course they do, and this very delightful offering by her is exactly what I and her many other fans really like. Versatility, extremely lovely talent, gift and musical expression like no other. Some of her songs suit her voice perfectly. Have you ever heard her sing “Danny Boy” or “Amazing Grace” or “Summertime” in her own distinctive, pleasant, and completely absorbing way? You will on this excellent tape that includes not only these great vocal rendition, but you’ll also hear her on “The Cuckoo”, “Lord Franklin”. Teddy Bears’ Picnic” “One I Love”, Whiskey Before Breakfast”, “Wayfaring Stranger”, The Bonnie Bonnie Banks of the Virgie O”, “Ragtime Annie”, “A Housewife’s Lament”, “Crafty Maid’s Policy”, and “Napolean’s Retreat” make this a complete and totally enjoyable treat. Keep it up Phyllis, and now that you know how easy it is to produce such a delightful musical production, more will be in the offing! “

  • “Even though I’m a stickler for traditional acoustic bluegrass, country and folk music, there’s only two kinds of music for me. Good and bad! This is ‘good’ music, even though it’s not the above mentioned. Phyllis has gathered together some fine musicians: Curly Martin on percussion; one of Omaha’s favorites Mark Nelson on arrangements, bass, guitar, melodica, banjo, vocals and organ. When he’s doing his organ thing, this group sounds like the late night smoky jazz clubs in Paris, not a few I have visited. These are Phyllis’ original babies, and they’re good. I would like to have heard a ‘raw’ harmonica on ‘Breakfast Table Blues,’ maybe she’ll ask me someday. As for Phyllis, she too, sounds like the bawdy blues singers that make smoky Paris night spots so wonderful. Keep it up, Phyllis.”
