One-Stringed Dulcimer
Target Group Activity
Build and learn to play a one-stringed dulcimer. This American folk instrument is a great introduction to learning about the string family.
Suggested minimum age: Grade 3 Approximate cost $3 per student
Materials needed per instrument:
- one length of 1"x 2" clear pine board 33" long. (Must be straight, no knot holes.)
- two wooden large kitchen match sticks
- one .011 ball end guitar string (.012 is an acceptable alternate)
- one small 1/2 inch nail with head
- one screw eye: 1/4 interior diameter , 1/2 inch shank
- one guitar pick
Tools:
- hammer
- Elmer’s wood glue
- ruler for every student
- pencil for every student
- masking tape
Schedule
- Day 1 Build instrument.
Sand pre-cut boards.
Draw frets using taped template.
Glue matchsticks.
Screw in and glue tuner.
Attach and tighten string
- Days 2,3,4 Learn to play three familiar songs
- Day 5 Perform
