
Japanese Hand Drum
Travel to Japan in your imagination. Write haiku, speak Japanese, compose pentatonic music and make a den-den daiko (
). We promise you'll be home by supper.
Suggested for Grade 2 or 3.
Materials needed per student:
- 2 small plastic plates (Hefty)
- 2 plastic beads with large eyes
- 2 seven inch pieces of dental floss
- 1 optional 10 inch wooden dowel or paint stirrer (If dowel or stirrer is used, we will need 2 more pieces of dental floss.)

Schedule
- Day 1 Make hand drums.
Write group haiku.
Learn three Japanese words.
Assign individual haiku.
- Day 2 Learn pentatonic scale.
Set haiku to music.
- Day 3 Perform.
