Sandpaper Blocks
All aboard the music train! Make a music train, learn a train song and build sandpaper blocks on the road to discovering basic music rhythms.
Suggested activity for Kindergarten.
Materials needed per student:
- two blocks of pine board 1½ X 2½ X 2½ inches
- two pieces of medium-find sandpaper 5 X 5 inches
- (optional: Velveeta cheese boxes)
Tools:
- scissors
- staple gun
- staples
- 11 large cardboard boxes all the same size - big enough for students to stand in approximately 15" by 23" (egg boxes are generally available at grocers, Walmart or Kmart)
- 3 colors of quick drying spray paint
- permanent markers
Schedule
- Day 1 Learn basic rhythm patterns and train song
Make sandpaper blocks.
- Day 2 Decorate train boxes with notes.
Rehearse train song and actions with blocks.
- Day 3 Make engineer hats.
Rehearse train song and actions with blocks in box train.
- Day 4 Perform.
